At CORE Health Care, art is used as a therapeutic modality. Residents are given the opportunity to learn new skills or improve upon prior learning in the areas of sketching and painting. Each art session integrates other therapeutic goals such as increasing hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, self-expressions, vocalization and memory.
The artists’ pictures are exhibited in art shows throughout the state. Several have sold their art and others have their work on display at various settings such as universities and galleries. This is a wonderful boost of self-esteem for residents and provides great opportunities for community integration. For some of our residents, art literally provides a new identity. Our goal is to make everyone someone special at CORE Health Care, and being able to say, “I’m an artist,” for example, can be a very significant step in the therapeutic process.
