Recent research indicates that traumatic brain injury can result in significant and complex sleep disturbances. Indeed, it is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of brain injury survivors suffer sleep apnea that, if left untreated, can severely impede their ability to benefit from rehabilitation. Few rehabilitation programs are aware of this issue, and fewer still adequately respond to the sleep needs of their patients.
CORE Health Care evaluates the integrity of each patient’s sleep through interview and observation. Patients suspected of having inadequate or disrupted sleep or who routinely experience daytime fatigue are referred to a sleep specialist experienced with trauma-related sleep dysfunction. After thorough evaluation, most often including an overnight polysomnogram, the physician consults with the survivor, family and CORE staff on treatment approaches. Every effort is made to maximize our patients’ sleep experience both during their rehabilitation as well as in the discharge setting.
The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accreditation has been awarded to CORE Health Care for the Residential Rehabilitation Brain Injury Programs for Adults.
